Learn About Power Surge or Exceeded Power Limits on USB Hub Port Message with an External Drive



Description


Power Surge on Hub Port or USB device has exceeded the power limits of it's hub port is seen.
Some hardware only allow a max of 500 milliamps (mA) per drive.

Resolution


The message does not mean the USB port is bard.
The drive should still work as normal.
Use these steps to turn off the message.


External hard drives need at least 650 milliamps.
Use a USB Power Booster Cable if the computer is limited to 500.

Windows 11, 10, 8, 7, and Vista

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click System and Security.
  4. Click Device Manager.
    It is under the System.
  5. Open Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
  6. Right-click USB Enhanced Host Controller.
    Select Properties.
  7. Click Advanced Tab.
  8. Check the box that says: Don't tell me about USB errors.
    Click Ok.
