Help with Software Packaging

Firmware for Arkeia hardware and virtual appliances is available on the firmware downloads page. Four packages deliver the current versions of Arkeia firmware.

Software for Arkeia Backup Servers and Agents is available on the software downloads page. For a given platform, all of Arkeia's products are typically delivered in fewer than a dozen packages--though over 600 packages are available in total.

Minimum Required Packages for Software

The WD Arkeia Suite is delivered for deployment across over 150 platforms. If you are deploying your Arkeia Backup Server as a traditional software application, you'll may only need two packages. You'll need:

  • Arkeia Master Package is required to install either an Arkeia Backup Server or an Arkeia Backup Agent. If your backup server machines are different platforms than your backup client machines, you will need to download a different package for each platform. Packages are platform-specific.
  • Arkeia Web Graphical User Interface Package: If your Backup Server is deployed as software and you will use the product's Web UI, you need this package. This Web UI includes an HTTP Server and is usually installed on the backup server machine, but can be installed on another machine, even on a different platform.

Minimum Required Packages for Appliances

If your Arkeia Backup Server is deployed as an appliance or virtual appliance, the appliance firmware will deliver both the Backup Server and the Web User Interface.

  • Arkeia Firmware Package: You can deploy an appliance as a hardware appliance or a virtual appliance. Go to the firmware download page to download the Arkeia Virtual Appliance. Our hardware appliances are pre-loaded with firmware (the Backup Server and Web UI).
  • Arkeia Master Package: This package will provide the Agent you need to backup files. Go to the software download page and specify your platform.

Firmware Downloads

Different packages are required for Backup Servers deployed as Demonstration Appliances, Virtual Appliances, and firmware upgrades. Go to our firmware download page to find the four firmware packages:

  • For initial installation of the Arkeia Virtual Appliance on VMware ESX/vSphere,
  • For initial installation of the Arkeia Virtual Appliance on VMware ESXi,
  • For the demonstration version of the Arkeia Appliance,
  • For firmware upgrades for either the Physical or Virtual Appliances

Arkeia Backup Agents are the same (and are downloaded as the same packages) whether your Arkeia Backup Server is deployed as an Appliances, a Virtual Appliance, or Software.

Software Downloads: Mapping of Products to Packages

The diagram in the upper-right corner of this page shows how products of the WD Arkeia Suite are distributed among installation packages. The same information is presented in a table to the right.

The bulk of functionality is bundled into a single package: the Arkeia Master Package which contains all the basic functionality of both Servers and Agents and a handful of specialized agents:

  • Arkeia VSS-based agents for Microsoft applications and databases: Exchange, Hyper-V, SharePoint, and SQL Server; (many other agents are still distributed in specialized packages),
  • Arkeia SMS-based agents for Novell applications: eDirectory and GroupWise; (many other agents are still distributed in specialized packages),
  • Arkeia ESX agent for VMware ESX v3.0 and and ESX v3.5, which is only available from our FTP site and only for WD Arkeia versions 8.0 and 8.1.

The Master Package does not include the:

  • Arkeia Web Graphical User Interface (so this large package can be installed on a separate machine),
  • Arkeia Backup Agents for Databases (except for VSS- and SMS-based agents)
  • Arkeia Backup Agents for Applications (except for VSS- and SMS-based agents)
  • Arkeia Backup Agents for Virtualized Environments
  • Arkeia Disaster Recovery components, including the Disaster Recovery Agent and CD images for Disaster Recovery of Linux and Windows machines

Go to our software download page to find all our software packages.

Disaster Recovery Packages

Arkeia delivers on-line Disaster Recovery (DR) solutions for both Windows and Linux platforms. Off-line Disaster Recovery (DR) is available for all platforms. These packages are summarized in the table below.

For all DR solutions the recovery process is always "off-line". That is, the machine is running recovery software, not its usual applications. The recovery of files is performed over the network to speed machine recovery and eliminate the need to handle media. The replacement machine is booted from any removable media and pre-disaster disk drive images are written to the volumes of the replacement machine. Some hardware can also be booted over a network.

By comparison, the backup process may be either on-line or off-line. On-line backups are available for all Linux and several (recent) Windows platforms. Windows on-line backups are made possible by Microsoft's Volume Shadow-Copy Service (VSS) technology, first delivered with Windows Server 2003.

Five Arkeia packages are relevant to Disaster Recovery of which three are recovery CD images. The table above refers to these five packages:

  • Windows DR-online Agent Package
  • Arkeia Master Package (contains Linux DR-online Agent)
  • Package for ISO image for restore of DR-online Windows backups
  • Package for ISO image for restore of DR-online Linux backups
  • Package for ISO image for all off-line backup and restore on any x86 or x86-64 platform

On-line backups support disaster recovery solutions for Windows and Linux on x86 and x86-64 hardware. Off-line backups support all x86 and x86-64 machines, whatever the operating system. Off-line backups are designed for disaster recovery, not individual file recovery.

Installation and Upgrade under Different Deployment Scenarios

The table above describes which packages are required to install or upgrade the three deployments of the Arkeia Backup Server: Software, Appliance, and Virtual Appliance.

Note two special cases in the table:

  • The SAME WD Arkeia firmware package upgrades both the physical and virtual appliances.
  • Initial installation of the Arkeia Physical Appliance is performed at the factory that builds the appliance. For the Physical Appliance, only firmware upgrades and a demonstration package are available.

Many Packages Include Both Agent and Server Software

The Arkeia Master Package combines both the Arkeia Backup Server and the Arkeia Backup Agent. The Arkeia Backup Agent, and therefore the Arkeia Master Package, is available on 200 platforms. However, the Backup Server is available on only 100 of these platforms. As a result, the availability of the Arkeia Master Package on a platform does not mean that the Backup Server is available on that platform.

Note that the Arkeia Master Package includes the Disaster Recovery Option for Linux Servers and Agents, but not the Disaster Recovery Option for Windows Agents. Also, the Central Management Server is not packaged for delivery as an Arkeia Software Application. It is only available in the Arkeia Physical Appliance and the Arkeia Virtual Appliance.

In the diagram above, each "Arkeia Master Package on a Specific Platform" icon represents the Arkeia Master Package for a specific platform. All packages deliver Arkeia's Backup Agent. Some packages also deliver Arkeia's Backup Server.
