Appropriate Usage and Location Recommendations for 3.5" External Drives and My Cloud Products

The My Book, My Cloud, and My Cloud Home series of external hard drives contain air vents along the top, bottom and back of the drive. Placing the drive on its side may cause it to overheat due to restricted air-flow. Enclosures with top, bottom or rear vents must be placed upright with their rubber feet firmly planted on a flat surface with at least and inch or more of space to the sides to prevent it from overheating.

IMPORTANT:
  • Ensure the drives are standing upright with all four rubber feet on a solid flat surface.
  • Ensure there is a least one full inch or open space around all sides of the enlosure.
  • Use the drive in a well ventilated area
  • DO NOT place the drive in an area that does not provide free air-flow.
  • DO NOT place the drive in an area exposted to moisture.
  • DO NOT place anything on top of the drive or obstruct the enclosure vents.
  • DO NOT handle or move the drive during use or powered on which will increase the possibility of drive failure.
  • Unplug all the cables from the drive before moving it to a different location and minimize shaking the drive during transport to avoid damaging the drive during the process. For more information, please refer to Answer ID 32046: Appropriate Storage Recommendations for External Drives.
