How to Fix 'Windows Was Unable to Complete the Format'



Description


An error occurs or the format may not complete when:

  • The drive is not setup correctly in the BIOS.
  • The format is stopped by a virus or spyware.
  • The drive is corrupted.
  • BIOS and system updates may be needed.
  • The drive or data cable is damaged.
  • There is a conflict between the hard drive and another device.

Resolution


  • Running a low-level format can resolve corruption issues.

    This will run a full test on the hard drive to check its health.

  • Make sure the latest BIOS is installed for the computer, motherboard, or PCI controller card.
    BIOS updates can be obtained from their respective maker.

    The BIOS should be set to Auto-Detect.
    LBA, Large, or Auto should be setup if there is a Mode option.

  • Make sure that the latest drivers are installed.
    Drivers can be found through a devices respective hardware maker.

  • SATA and IDE ribbon cables should be no longer than 18 inches.

    IDE cables should be a standard Ultra ATA (80-conductor) cable.
    Ultra ATA and SATA cables can be found in most computer stores.

  • Run a Quick Format instead of a Full Format.

  • Switch the SATA or IDE port the drive is connected to.
    This can be done to avoid possible conflicts with other devices on the bus.

  • Plug the drive into another USB or connection port.
    The hard drive can also be plugged into another system to format.
