How to Properly Recycle and Dispose of Western Digital Drives

Western Digital hard drives manufactured after February 26th, 2006 do not contain hazardous materials and can be treated as non-hazardous solid waste. Western Digital hard drives manufactured before February 26th, 2006 may contain a small amount of lead (Pb).

Lead (Pb) is classified as a hazardous material by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and European Environment Agency (EEA). When lead (Pb) is not disposed of or recycled properly, this material can present problems to the environment as the electronic items containing Lead usually end up in local landfills and organic waste facilities.
