My Book Pro and Premium II: How to Rebuild RAID 1(Mirror)

If an internal hard drive on your WD My Book Pro II or WD My Book Premium II RAID System fails under a RAID 1 (Mirrored) configuration, the data on the unit will still remain on the working hard drive. The directions below detail how to rebuild the RAID 1 array on the WD My Book Pro II or WD My Book Premium II RAID System.

  1. You will first need to dismantile and replace the failed hard drive in the WD My Book Pro II or WD My Book Premium II RAID System following the directions in Answer ID 7284: How to dismantle a My Book Pro Edition II, My Book Premium Edition II, or My Book World Edition II to replace a hard drive.

  2. Ensure that the WD My Book Pro II or WD My Book Premium II RAID System is connected to power only (do not connect the USB or FireWire cable). Press the power button on the front of the RAID system to power on the unit.

  3. The WD My Book Pro II or WD My Book Premium II RAID System will automatically rebuild the RAID 1 array on the RAID system. The front LED Indicator will show drive activity. The outer ring will turn in a clockwise motion during drive activity (during the rebuild process).

IMPORTANT: The rebuild process may take up to 8 hours to complete. Do not power off the unit and do not connect the unit to a computer system during this time. Once the rebuild is complete, the front LED Indicators will no longer show drive activity.
  4. You can now safely connect the interface cable from the unit to the computer system to access your data.
