Description
Using an NTFS formatted My Passport external hard drive on macOS 10.9 and higher results in the drive showing up as Untitled. This means the drive is unable to mount.
An incompatibility between operating systems and the NTFS file system can cause this issue.
Resolution
Windows
- Plug the external drive into a Windows 7 SP1 PC or higher and let the drive enumerate
- Plug the device back into the Mac. The drive should now be readable, showing the proper Volume Label and drive content
macOS
- Format the drive as HFS+ if using for macOS only or for Time Machine Backups. For help on how to format a drive, please see Answer ID 8200: Steps to Format a Drive for Use with Windows or macOS
- To recover the pre-loaded software that were deleted after formatting the drive, download the Mac versions of WD Security and WD Drive Utilities. For more information on WD Security and WD Drive Utilities, please see Answer ID 50396: How to Install and Use WD Drive Utilities Software
