My Cloud and My Cloud Home Share Access Failure with Multiple Connections To a Server or Shared Resource Not Allowed Message



Description


Access to network share fails and shows an error message on Windows.


"You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name are not allowed



STOP Critical:

Windows does not support multiple connections to network shares in a single Sign In session on the same computer.


  • Access to a Private Share with one user name and trying to access another share using a different user name.

  • Access to a Public Share and trying to access a Private Share.


Resolution



Reboot Computer and Sign In

  1. Reboot the computer.
    Sign In to Windows.

  2. Open Windows Explorer.
    Click Network.

  3. Access a password protected Private Share before a Public Share.
    Use the Local NAS Username and Password to login.


Private to Private Share (Different User Name)

Sign Out of Windows to access another Private share with a different user name and password.


  1. Sign Out of Windows.
    Sign In again.

  2. Access the Private Share with the different NAS user name and password.


Public to Private Share

Sign Out of Windows and access the Private Share first.

This will make Windows use the Private Share credentials when accessing the Public Share in the same Windows session.


  1. Sign Out of Windows.
    Sign In again.

  2. Access the Private Share before the Public Share.


Windows 11 and10 Sign In Options

Local Account Sign In

  • Windows 11 and 10 can sign in using the Local User Name and password.
  • This Sign In option is a Local Account that DOES NOT use Online or Active Directory.
  • Local Account Sign In DOES NOT access the Samba (SMB) network layer.

    Solution
    Access the password protected Private Share before a Public Share.



Online Account Sign In

  • Windows 10 and higher has a Sign In option using the Windows Online Account email address as the username.
  • This Sign In uses the Windows Online Account. The account uses Active Directory.
  • Windows Samba (SMB) network environment will use the Windows Online Account email address to access network shares.
  • Access to a My Cloud Private or Public share will fail.
  • Windows does not allow more than one user to access a network share in the same active session.

    Solution
    Use a different Local Log In Account.
    Change the computer access from "Sign In - Online Account" to "Log In - Local Account" will allow access to network shares errors.



My Cloud Admin User

Access shares using the admin user name and password on a My Cloud.
This user has Read/Write access to all shares by default.
Check Share Permissions in the dashboard and change if needed.

Make sure the required services are running.
