This article describes how to resolve an “Incompatible drive” message received when replacing or adding a drive to DX4000 or RX4100*END
Description
The message Incompatible Drive occurs when replacing or adding a drive to a WD DX4000 or RX4100.
The message is displayed when the installed hard drive is:
- Not on the current approved list of drives listed in Answer ID 9443 List of Compatible Hard Drives for WD Sentinel products
- On the current approved list of drives but the WD software on the device is not updated to include those drives
Resolution
There are 2 options:
IMPORTANT: WD recommends upating to the current software for the device in either case.Option 1: WD Software Update
- Download the following firmware package. Firmware 1_7_6_21_.zip
- Copy the .zip file to any location on the WD Sentinel.
- Open the Sentinel dashboard either through the connector software or Remote Desktop Connection.
- Go to the Monitor tab and select Software Update.
- Update from file by selecting the .zip file.
NOTE: There is no need to unzip the contents. The update process will auto unzip the package and extract the contents - After the firmware is updated, Reboot the WD Sentinel device to accept the new hard drives.

Replacement drives in a RAID configuration match the original drive as close as possible. For example, if the failed drive specifications are 7200 RPM, 64 MB cache, SATA III, 4TB, the replacement hard drive should have the same specifications. |
