Description
The error message Startup Failed 0xD9 is displayed on the DX4000 LED display or if the RX4100 will not complete it's boot process.
Startup Failed 0xD9 occurs when the RAID volume or boot partition has become corrupted.
Resolution
Please use the instructions below to resolve the Startup Failed 0xD9 error message.
- Reboot Device
Reboot the WD Sentinel
If this does not resolve the issue, the RAID volume is corrupt ans needs to be recreated. Please continue with the next step.
If the data on the unit is not needed, skip step 2. - Data Recovery Options
If data recovery is required, please contact one of our data recovery partners or try one of these disk repair and data recovery solutions.

Western Digital Warranty Policy - Low Level Drive Format
Critical:
The process is Data Destructive and cannot be undone.
ALL THE DATA ON THE DRIVE WILL BE LOST!
- Remove the drives from the WD Sentinel and perform a Low Level format.
To perform a low level format, please refer to Answer ID 10850: How to Fully Erase, Low-Level Format, or Write Zeros on a Drive - Insert the drives into the WD Sentinel and perform an operating system recovery
After the low level format has been completed, perform an operating system recovery, please refer to Answer ID 16635 How to recover a Sentinel DX4000 or RX4100
If this does not resolve the issue, please continue with the next step.
- Remove the drives from the WD Sentinel and perform a Low Level format.
- Recreate my storage
Perform the Recreate my storage option to prepare the RAID volume for the Operating System recovery option.

- Operating System Recovery
Perform an Operating System Recovery of the WD Sentinel.

If this does not resolve the issue, please continue with the next step. - Defective or Damaged Drive - Warranty Replacement
To replace the defective or damaged drive under warranty, please check the drive's warranty
