WD Sentinel DS6100: LCD Display BOOT VOLUME FAILURE

Description

The DS6100 displays a message BOOT VOLUME FAILURE
This message is displayed when one of the two drives in the OS RAID volume has become degraded.

Resolution

First verify which of the two boot drives is not being read by the system.
  1. Allow the DS6100 to fully boot up.
  2. Login to the DS6100l with the Administrator credentials either locally if you have a keyboard, monitor, and mouse connected directly to the DS6100 or by remote desktop connection.
  3. Open the dashboard from the desktop icon.
  4. Click on the MONITOR tab and scroll down to Internal Storage
  5. Under Boot Drives, you will see which of the drives had failed
  6. Drive Bay 1 is for drive "A" Drive Bay 2 is for drive "B"
  7. Internally, the drives are marked drives "A" and "B"
  8. Make a note of which drive has failed

The next step is to verify if the drive has come loose from the mounting bracket.
  1. Power off the DS6100 and unplug the power and Ethernet cables from the back of the DS6100
  2. Unplug any connected USB drives from the back of the DS6100 as well
  3. Use a screwdriver to remove the five black screws from the back of the DS6100
  4. Slide the cover off the DS6100 by pulling backwards away from the front of the unit
  5. Check the drive that showed as failed to make sure the mounting bracket that holds the 2-1/2” OS drive has not come loose
  6. If the drive was loose, re-seat the drive and re-assemble the DS6100
  7. Boot the DS6100 and see if the unit boots up normally
  8. If the DS6100 still has a degraded boot volume, the drive will need to be replaced

When the bad drive is replaced, the unit will automatically rebuild the mirror RAID without data loss to the boot volume.
