Steps to Move, Change Drives From One Enclosure to Another on a My Cloud (RAID Roaming)

 
 
 

2 and 4 bay My Clouds use RAID Roaming when drives are moved from one enclosure to another without the loss of data. Users and settings must be set up again. Enclosures changes can happen when one needs to be replaced or for an upgrade.

The table only lists examples of replacements assuming all drive bays in the old enclosure are filled.

IMPORTANT:
STOP Critical:
  • Safely power off or hibernate the my Cloud.
    This will prevent damage to the RAID and volumes.
  • RAID Roaming WILL NOT work if one of the drives is failing, has bad sectors or I/O Errors.
    It WILL NOT work if the RAID array is degraded or the file system has errors due to unsafe enclosure shutdown or power loss.

Steps to Move Drives

  • New Enclosure HAS Drives
    • Connect the ethernet cable to the router and the My Cloud.
    • Connect the power supply to the My Cloud and power source.
    • Power On the My Cloud.
    • Go to Step 1.

  • New Enclosure HAS NO Drives
    Go to Step 5.


  1. Access and setup the My Cloud.

  2. Click Settings.
    Click Firmware Update.
    Click Check for Updates

  3. Login and make sure all if OK if the firmware was updated.

  4. Power Off or Hibernate the My Cloud.
    Wait 5 to 10 minutes.
    Remove the Ethernet and power cable from the My Cloud.

  5. Insert the drives from the old enclosure into the new one.

    STOP Critical:

    The drives MUST BE put into the exact same drive bays as the old enclosure.
    Failure to do this will cause a lost of data.



  6. Connect the ethernet cable to the router and the My Cloud.
    Connect the power supply to the My Cloud and power source.
    Press the power button to power on the My Cloud if the model has one.
    Wait for the unit to boot up.

    The Power LED will be solid blue when ready.
    The Drive LEDs will be red. (expected)


  7. Login to the dashboard.
    Read the RAID Roaming message.
    Click OK.
    This will integrate the RAID with the new enclosure.

  8. Wait while the enclosure accepts the RAID volume(s).
    DO NOT attempt to access the My Cloud during this time.
    Wait until the Drive LEDs are solid Blue.

  9. Click Storage.
    Click Disk Status.
    Check that Disk status are Good.
    Click RAID.
    Check that RAID Volume(s) are Good.

  10. Click Settings.
    Click Firmware Update.
    Click Check for Updates.

  11. Add users, data and configure settings when the process is completed.
