Introduction to USB Backups
The contents of a USB Drive can be backed-up to a My Cloud Home device
- The USB Drive must be connected to the USB Port of the My Cloud Home
- The backup feature is available through the My Cloud Home web app and mobile app
- USB Backups must be manually started
- A directory is created based on the USB Drive volume name
- Full and Incremental USB backups are supported

IMPORTANT:
FAT32 and exFAT are less resilient file system than NTFS and HSF+ and are more prone to corruption which may lead to a USB Drive No Longer Seen issue on a My Cloud Home. Formatting the external USB drive using NTFS or HSF+ can help prevent such issues from occurring.
Export, Copy or Backup Content with USB
IMPORTANT:
The My Cloud Home USB port can only be used to import and export data to and from the device.
It CANNOT be used to extend the data storage of the My Cloud Home.
The My Cloud Home USB export and import:
- Will copy only new or updated files and folders in the DEVICE OWNER'S user private space
- Same named files with different content are appended with numbers creating separate copies
- Can select individual files outside of folders or entire folders
- Will NOT overwrite existing files and folders
- Will NOT backup contacts in the added guests user private space or public network share

Export to a USB Using Mobile App
- Sign in to the My Cloud Home Mobile App.
- Connect a usb storage device to the USB port of the My Cloud Home.
- A notification will appear that A USB device was plugged into your My Cloud Home device.
- Tap the 3-line Menu icon.
Copy USB icon should now be available.
- Tap the Copy USB icon.
- A Checking USB Status message may be seen.
Tap To drive. - Copy all will only copy content in the user private space of the user that started the export.
- files and folders which are only in the Shared section will not be copied.
- Copy all or Select files.
- To copy all data:
- Tap Copy all.
Tap Copy now. - A Checking USB status message may be seen.
Tap Ok. - A Copying to external drive message may appear.
Tap Ok.
- Tap Copy all.
- To select which files to copy:

Tap Select files or folders.

USB Backup Notifications and Monitoring
My Cloud Home USB backup job progress can be monitored in the My Cloud Mobile App.
When the USB Backup job has completed, a notification will be pushed to the My Cloud Home mobile app.
- When a USB is plugged into a My Cloud Home the following notification may be seen.
- Open the My Cloud Home mobile app.
- View the active backup process while the backup job is running.
My Cloud Home USB Backup supports a Full and Incremental Backups.
Zero Bytes may be displayed when an incremental backup job is running.
- A Copy successful! will be displayed.
Click OK. - A Finished copying files notification may be seen.
- Failed USB Backups should be restarted.
USB Backup Limitations
My Cloud Home and My Cloud Home Duo USB Backup does not support the following USB environments and features:
- My Cloud Home Duo with more than one USB drive attached - Only the 1st drive that is recognized is mounted
- USB Hub with more than one USB drive attached - Only the 1st drive recognized is mounted
- Password protected USB drives - The password must be removed
- Multi Partition USB Drives - Only the 1st partition is recognized and mounted
- Mobile phone USB backups are not supported.
- For more information, please refer to the section titled USB Backup Does Not Save All Mobile Phone or USB Camera Content.
- Digital USB Cameras are not supported.
- For more information, please refer to the section titled USB Backup Does Not Save All Mobile Phone or USB Camera Content.
- Mobile tablet USB backups are not supported
- 3.5" Internal hard drive USB adapters and docking stations are not supported
If your USB device is not recognized by the My Cloud Home, please Contact Western Digital Technical Support with the following information regarding your USB drive:
- Make and Model
- Capacity
- File system format? (NTFS, exFAT, HSF+, etc...)
- Camera Make & Model or Windows / macOS version used to format the drive
- Encrypted or non-encrypted content?
- How is the drive portioned? (MBR, GPT)
- How many partitions?
- What RAID mode if applicable? (RAID1, RAID0, JBOD etc...)
USB Backup Data Transfer Speed
Description
My Cloud Home USB Backups are too slow or taking longer than expected to complete.
Data Integrity takes precedence over speed and performance when backing up content from an external attached USB devices.
Use the information below determine estimated USB Backup job completion time.
IMPORTANT:
USB Backup performance will vary depending on the content and directory structure of the USB devices content.
EXAMPLE SPEEDS:
- Single 10 GB file transfer from USB to My Cloud Home - up to 99 MB/s
- 50 GB of 15,000 files transfer from USB to My Cloud Home - up to 13 MB/s
Resolution
Please allow the Backup of the USB content to complete.
When the USB Backup job has completed, a notification will be pushed to the My Cloud Home mobile app.
- A Failed USB Backup jobs should be restarted.
- The 2nd backup job will be treated as a incremental process adding only content that does not exists on the My Cloud Home.
USB Backup Does Not Detect or Save All Mobile Phone or USB Camera Content
Description
My Cloud Home USB Backup does not detect or does not save all content of a connected mobile phone or USB camera.
Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) and Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) are required for mobile phone and camera USB backups.
MTP and PTP are not supported on the My Cloud Home.
Resolution
Mobile Phone Camera Roll Backup
The My Cloud Home mobile app for Android and iOS can be used to perform automatic camera roll backups.
Download and install the My Cloud Home mobile app for Android or iOS mobile phones and enabled the Auto Camera Roll Backups

USB Camera
USB Camera content must be extracted from the Camera and or SD Card to the local computer before uploading to the My Cloud Home using the Web or Desktop App.
USB Drive Not Detected
Description
Description
My Cloud Home or Duo does not recognize an attached external USB drive.
The external USB drive may not be supported by the My Cloud Home and Duo or the file system used may be corrupted.
Please refer to the solutions below for more details.
Resolution
IMPORTANT:
- A USB device attached to a My Cloud Home will not be seen in the My Cloud Home Web App or on Windows or macOS computer as expanded storage.
- USB devices attached to a My Cloud Home can only be seen in the My Cloud Home mobile app and used for USB to My Cloud Home backups.
- For more information, please refer to the section titled Cannot Access Contents of USB Drive Connected for more information.
When a supported external USB drive is attached, the USB file system is mounted and the following message is displayed:
If the USB drive is seen, please refer to the section titled Export, Copy or Backup Content with USB for more information.
If the USB drive is not seen or mounted on the My Cloud Home, follow the solutions below.
Password Protected Drive
Password protected USB drives are not supported.
The password must be removed to use the USB drive with a My Cloud Home.
Supported File Systems
Ensure the file system used on the USB device is compatible with a My Cloud Home.
IMPORTANT:
FAT32 and exFAT are less resilient file system than NTFS and HSF+ and are more prone to corruption which may lead to a USB Drive No Longer Seen issue on a My Cloud Home. Formatting the external USB drive using NTFS or HSF+ can help prevent such issues from occurring.
USB Cables
A USB cable may work with one computer but not another. Obtaining a high quality replacement or trying a different (longer or shorter) USB cable may resolve your issue.
Faulty USB Drive
Check the drive for damage and failures.
To check the drive, please refer to Answer ID 12452: Steps to Check Drives for Errors or Failures on Windows and macOS
USB Port Power and Dual Powered USB Cable
If the alternate computer can see and access the drive, the primary or other computers USB port may not provide enough power for the external drive.
Power from USB ports can vary. The use of a Power Booster cable may be needed in order to provide enough power to the USB drive. A Power Booster cable is a Y-shaped cable, with an extra connector, that allows for connecting a USB device to two USB ports on a computer.
A powered USB hub may be needed depending on the power requirements and consumption of the external USB drive.
For (My Book) connect the power adapter directly in to a wall socket if available.
NOTE: This solution is not suitable for My Cloud Home (single bay) that have a single external USB port.
Different Computer
Connect the device to a different computer. If the computer can see and mount the device, check the device for errors.
- Use WD Drive Utilities to run a complete drive test.
For assistance using WD Drive Utilities, please see Answer ID 13880: Install and Use WD Security and WD Drive Utilities - Perform a Disk Defragmentation:
- Click on Start (Windows logo) at the bottom-left of the screen
- Type defrag and press Enter
- Select the hard drive and click Optimize
- Safely eject the drive in Windows and Power Off the Desktop drive if applicable

My Cloud Home Power Cycle
- Power OFF the My Cloud Home
- Disconnect the external USB drive
- Power ON the My Cloud Home
- Connect the USB cable directly to the My Cloud Home. Do Not use a non powered USB Hub
Drive Reformat
In some cases, an external drive formatted by one computer may not be seen by a different computer or device. Please follow the steps below if the drive was originally formatted on a different computer:- Connect the external drive to the computer the drive was originally formatted on
- Copy or Backup the content to another device
- Safely eject the external drive. For assistance, please see Answer ID 21880: Steps to Safe Eject and Remove USB Flash and External Drives on Windows or macOS
- Connect the external device to the My Cloud Home
Unsupported USB Drives
External USB drives that are not seen by a My Cloud Home or Duo are not supported.
If all of the solutions above have been exhausted and the drive does not mount or is not seen by the My Cloud Home, the drive is not supported.
Cannot Access Contents of USB Drive Connected
Description
The contents of an external USB drive connected to a My Cloud Home cannot be viewed using:
- Windows Explorer
- macOS Finder
- MyCloud.com Web App
- My Cloud Home Mobile App
- WD Discovery Desktop App Mounted Drive
The contents of an attached USB drive can only be accessed using the USB Import / Export feature of the My Cloud Home mobile and web app.
