Introduction to Sonos
What Is Sonos?
Sonos is a wireless multi-room music sound system that streams digital music from online streaming services, as well as music libraries on computers and devices connected to your home network. Sonos allows you to create "zones" around your home for listening to music.
What is a Sonos Zone?
A zone can be a single player in a room, an area of your home such as dining room, kitchen or ooutdoor patio consisting on one of more Sonos music players. A "zone" is created when you choose one or more players to play the same music at the same time. IE: An outdoor patio with a swimming pool with 4 of 6 Sonos speakers.
How Does it work?
Sonos can be connected to the router and accessed over the internet from a remote location including our mobile device or place of vacation or employment. If an internet connection is not available, music can be streamed from any device attached to the local area network (LAN).
What music formats are supported by Sonos?
Sonos supports industry standard music formats such as mps, wma, wav and others depending on the method of media play. Local playback support formats may not be the same or identical to streaming media formats. For a complete list support formats and bitrate and devices, please refer to Sonos Article 80 - Supported Audio Formats.
Requirements for using a NAS with Sonos
Sonos works with any NAS drive that supports the SMB(v1) / CIFS file sharing protocol.
