WD ShareSpace: Update Firmware

This answer explains how to view what firmware is currently installed on a WD ShareSpace, and if needed update it to the latest version (currently version 2.3.02).*END

Domain Users: please have the WD ShareSpace rejoin the domain to complete the update - see KBA 9454 for more information.

Instructions to update the firmware automatically:

Please follow the instructions below in order to check and/or update the firmware on a WD ShareSpace:

Important:

• Be sure to backup any data on the WD ShareSpace before updating the device. If the upgrade is interrupted during the update process, the device will become unusable.
• Windows users will need to have WD Link installed to follow these instructions. For assistance finding or installing WD Link, please see Answer ID 2757: Installing WD Link in Windows.
• Users running on Mac OSX 10.5.x (Leopard), 10.6.x (Snow Leopard), or 10.7.x (Lion), open Bonjour and select the WD ShareSpace from the Webpages section of the utility, then start with step 4 in the instructions below.

1. Start WD Link.
   

   

   
   
2. Click on the WD ShareSpace drive in the Devices Found list.


3. Click on the Configure button.
   

   

   
   
4. Type in the username and password for the drive and press Enter. By default these are admin/admin.
   

   

   
   
5. Select Advanced Mode.
   

   

   
   
6. Select Update.
   

   

   
   
7. Click Check for New Firmware.
   

   

   
   
8. If a new firmware update is available, you can click the Download button to retrieve it. Otherwise, you will see a status message that your device is up to date.
   

   

   
   
9. After the ShareSpace downloads the new firmware version, click the Upgrade button to apply it.
   

   

   
   
10. The system will show a status menu while applying an update. Do not interrupt the upgrade process by trying to access the drive, power it off, or try to open the drive's web interface during the update process.
    

    

    
    
11. After your firmware has been updated, the device will reboot. The user interface redirects to the System Information page after the update has completed. (See important note below.)
    

    

    
    

IMPORTANT: If you receive an error that the unit was either "unable to connect to server" or you received a "connection failed" when trying to update, please ensure that the unit has open access to the internet. Make sure that any firewalls on your router are disabled. Moreover, if you are behind a proxy, you may need to move the unit to an open internet connection to perform the update.

Instructions to apply patch:

1. If you have not done so, download and unzip (if it is in a .ZIP File format) the file above to a location you will remeber.


2. Turn on your WD ShareSpace, and access the Network Storage Manager from a web browser.


3. Switch to Advanced Mode by clicking on the Advanced Mode link in the upper right hand corner of the screen.

5. Click on the Manual link at the top of the table.
   

   

   
   
6. Click the Browse button.
   

   

   
   
7. Point the File Upload window to the unzipped patch file.
   

   

   
   
8. Click the Submit button to apply the firmware update to your device.
