Steps to Partition and Format a Drive with Acronis True Image for Western Digital

IMPORTANT: The Acronis True Image for Western Digital software is only supported on a Western Digital hard drive.

While the software may work for some third-party products (such as USB Enclosures), technical support is unable to assist with any issues which may occur while using a Western Digital internal drive inside a third-party external enclosure.


Formatting and partitioning a WD drive, using Acronis True Image for Western Digital

  1. Download and install Acronis True Image for Western Digital software.
    • Software for Windows
    • Software for macOS

    • Download of this software provides a 5-year license to use it with your compatible drive. This software is available only under a limited time offer and must be redeemed by download and install within 90 days of purchase or by December 31, 2025, whichever is earlier.       Use of this software requires download and installation to a system connected to at least one of the compatible Western Digital (WD, SanDisk, G-Technology) storage products. When using with the My Cloud NAS products, the software must be running from an operating system on the same local network.

      Acronis True Image for Western Digital will only backup files and folders physically stored on the local drive. It will not backup or pull data hosted remotely in Cloud Services such as Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, OneDrive.



  2. Launch Acronis True Image for Western Digital
  3. On the main screen of Acronis True Image for Western Digital, click the Tools icon, located on the left-side panel, and then click on Add New Disk

  5. The Add New Disk Wizard will open. Select the disk to be formatted and click on Next
  6. STOP Critical:
    Make sure the correct drive has been selected. This process is Data Destructive and irreversible.

  7. A pop-up window will appear warning ...the destination hard disk drive contains partitions that could contain useful data.. Click OK if the data has been backed up or no longer needed

  9. Select the radio button for Initialize disk in GPT layout and click on Next
  10. Use FAT32 for disks less than 2 Terabytes. Please see Answer ID 5618: Steps to Convert a Drive from GPT to MBR on Windows and Answer ID 20778: RETIRED: FAT32 File System and Partition Size Limits for Windows & macOS for more information about MBR and FAT32.

    Use GPT for disks larger than 2Terabytes.

    NOTE: Windows XP's 32-bit operating system and does not support GPT.

  11. Click Create new partition

  13. Click to expand the drop-down menu from the File system: field and select the desired file system and add a name for the drive in the Partition Label field and click on Accept

  15. The Create partitions page will now appear. Verify all settings are correct then click on Next

  17. A visual representation of Before: and After: with the new file system will be displayed. Click on Proceed

  19. A new Pop-up Disk Adding Progress window will appear, showing the progress. The user will have a chance to Cancel if necessary. The user will then get a Reboot Required pop-up in order to complete the task. Click on Restart

  21. The computer will restart in Acronis Boot Loader mode to complete the partition and fomat process. This should only take a few minutes. On completion, the computer will restart into Windows and the drive will be formatted.
