STOP Critical:
Do not allow power to be interrupted during the firmware update process for any reason. If the device loses power during this process, it can render your player unusable. If this has occurred, the only solution is to replace your unit. For assistance replacing your device see: Answer ID 10336: Steps to Get a Warranty Replacement, Power Supply, or USB Cable.
  1. Download the appropriate firmware for your WD TV Mini Media Player, WD Elements Play, or WD TV Play Media Player.
  2. Open the firmware update .ZIP file and extract the file (the zip file includes only one (1) file ending with the extension: .IMG) to a USB drive's main directory.
  3. Turn the WD TV Mini Media Player, WD Elements Play, or WD TV Play Media Player on and connect a USB drive.
  4. When you connect the USB drive, the WD TV Mini Media Player, WD Elements Play, or WD TV Play Media Player should take you straight to a screen that says New Firmware Found, and it should be highlighted. Simply press Enter.
If the WD TV Mini Media Player, WD Elements Play, or WD TV Play Media Player does not find a valid firmware, you will go to the normal Main Menu. Also, you will not find any firmware update option in the menu.
  5. You will be prompted to perform the firmware update. Select OK and press ENTER. This will restart the system.
  6. After restarting, the system automatically enters firmware update mode.
  7. Once the update process is completed , the HD media player will restart again.
Important:
  • The firmware file(s) must be directly on the drive, and not in a folder
  • Do not rename file(s)
  • The device should recognize the file immediately. If not, then double check the above points, and make sure that you have firmware that's newer than what you currently have on the device.
  • The firmware update can take up to 15 minutes. Do not allow the device to lose power durring this time as this can cause damage.
