My Cloud: Physically install and connect a WD NAS device to a home or small office network


To physically install and connect a Cloud Storage or a WD Network Attached Storage device to a home or small office network, please follow the instructions below. Please note that no special drivers need to be installed in order to access these devices.

STOP Critical:
To avoid overheating, make sure the drive is upright as shown in the illustration below. For more information on place a WD external drive, please see Answer ID 7242: Appropriate Use and Location Recommendations for 3.5" External Drives and My Cloud Products.

  1. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port located on the back of the drive.
  2. IMPORTANT: To meet Class B emission standards, use the shielded Ethernet cable provided.

  3. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable directly into a router or network switch port.
  4. Connect the end of the adapter into the power supply socket located on the back of the drive.
  5. Plug the power adapter into a power outlet. The unit powers up automatically.
  6. The drive will be ready for use when the LED indicates so. LED indication for Ready to Use varies between drives as follows:
Wait for the Cloud Storage or NAS device to finish powering up (approximately three minutes) before configuring the drive. The front LED on the drive will provide knowledge of the drive being ready.
