SATA 6.0 Gb/s Drives Not Detected by Some Motherboards


Affected Chipsets

  • Intel® 5 and 3400 Series Chipsets
  • Intel® NM10 Chipsets
  • Intel® ICH10, ICH9, ICH8, ICH7 Families

Description


These chipsets may not be able down shift a SATA 6.0 Gb/s to SATA 3.0 Gb/s.

These chipsets may not detect SATA 6.0 Gb/s devices when powering up or resuming from:

  • Standby, Sleep, or Suspend to RAM.
  • Hibernation or Suspend to Disk.
  • Soft Off.

Known Symptoms

  • The system may boot to a black screen with no prompt or other way to use the system.
  • When the BIOS boots up an error may show A bootable device has not been detected.
  • A blue screen may show when resuming power.
  • The drive may not be seen by the BIOS.
  • The drive may not be seen by the Operating System (OS).

  1. Reboot.

  2. Western Digital can provide the WDSpeed tool to set the drive to 3.0Gb/s.
